David Suleiman
David Suleiman was born and raised in the Barrio of Caimito, Puerto Rico. His style is the result of a lifetime of musical influence from the various portions of Puerto Rican heritage, mainly the African rhythms, and being exposed to a wealth of music by being part of different bands of a variety of genres since early on in his career. His first foray into learning an instrument himself came when he started to play the guitar aged 12 years old and a year later, he started playing cuatro. Later, at the age of 18, he began to play the alto sax.
At the college level, David began pursuing a computer science career following what he thought was his main interest. This was all while playing for the reggae band Guanajibo with his self-taught alto-saxophone skills. Nevertheless, it wasn’t long before David realized that expressing himself and sharing his joy with the audience was far more fulfilling and natural for him. Driven by the depth of the sound he picked up the tenor saxophone at the age of 23.
It was at this age that he finally began formal training and full commitment with the music endeavors. After realizing that making music was his main goal, he started attending the preparatory school at Puerto Rico’s Music Conservatory. As his confidence and style developed, he decided to apply to Berklee College of Music.
This new stage in his career has allowed his musical ambitions to grow and continue honing his sound and perfecting his harmonic and technical skills David has been featured at the Heineken Jazz Festival Fest sharing the stage with the likes of David Sanchez, Paquito D’ Rivera, Seamus Blake amongst others. He has also shared the stage with Damian Marley, Giovanni Hidalgo and Black Uhuru. He has been recorded in over a dozen albums with various artist from both local as well as international scene playing Saxophone as well as vocals.
David graduated Berklee College of Music after being awarded a Full Scholarship from both Berklee as well as Latin GRAMMY Cultural Foundation He began to showcase his music with different bands and groups putting his talent in the service of social justice rallies, non-profit organizations and performing in weddings, restaurants, inaugurations, receptions, and other events. His focus is to transmit his passion and soulful appeal to the audience. David hopes to inspire future generations as an educator
